The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is officially stepping out of the arcade and into the realm of mature, big-budget gaming.

Based on the critically acclaimed comic book miniseries by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is currently in active development. Re-revealed during the Summer Game Fest in June 2026, the project promises to be a massive departure from the colorful, family-friendly beat-'em-ups the Turtles are traditionally known for. If you are eager to dive into the darkest chapter of the TMNT mythos, here is a comprehensive breakdown of everything we know about the upcoming game. For the launch timing specifically, see our TMNT The Last Ronin release date guide.

The story: a dark, dystopian future

The Last Ronin leaves the bright, pizza-filled sewers of the past behind.

The narrative is set in a bleak, battle-ravaged, futuristic version of New York City that has been entirely conquered by the Foot Clan. In this dystopian timeline, three of the four Ninja Turtles, along with Master Splinter, have been killed. The game follows the lone surviving Turtle, who has donned a black mask and armed himself with the signature weapons of his fallen brothers: Leonardo's katanas, Donatello's bo staff, Raphael's twin sai, and Michelangelo's nunchaku.

Driven by survivor's guilt and vengeance, this β€œLast Ronin” embarks on a seemingly hopeless, bloody mission to exact justice on the forces that destroyed his family.

Gameplay: Platinum action meets God of War

To match the heavy narrative, the game is being designed as a massive AAA, single-player, third-person action RPG.

While gameplay footage has not yet been shown, the developer pedigree gives players a great idea of what to expect. The game is being built by PlatinumGames, the legendary Japanese studio famous for delivering some of the fastest, most fluid combat systems in gaming history, including Bayonetta, NieR: Automata, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

The developers are aiming to fuse Platinum's signature combo-heavy mechanics with the emotional, weighty storytelling and exploration style popularized by Sony's modern God of War franchise. Because the Ronin carries all four classic weapons, combat is expected to revolve around seamlessly switching fighting styles mid-encounter to adapt to different enemy types.

Development history and platforms

The road to making The Last Ronin a reality has been rocky.

The game was originally announced in 2023 under the development of Black Forest Games. However, that version of the project was quietly canceled. Paramount Games Studio eventually rebooted the project entirely from scratch, handing the reins over to PlatinumGames, who officially announced their involvement with a cinematic teaser at the 2026 Summer Game Fest. Because development was completely restarted, the game is still in its early stages.
