Fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been eagerly anticipating the franchise's jump into mature, AAA gaming ever since The Last Ronin video game was first announced. However, following a massive behind-the-scenes change in developers, the wait to explore a ruined New York City just got a lot longer.

Based on the wildly successful, dark comic book series created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, TMNT: The Last Ronin follows the final surviving Turtle in a dystopian future ruled by the Foot Clan. Equipped with the signature weapons of his three fallen brothers, he embarks on a desperate, bloody mission of vengeance. But when exactly can players expect to get their hands on this highly anticipated adaptation? Here is everything we know about the current state of development and the projected release window. When will TMNT The Last Ronin release?

Currently, there is no official release date for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. However, based on industry estimates and development timelines, the game is heavily projected to launch in 2028 or 2029 at the earliest.

The reason for the extended wait comes down to a complete project restart. The game was initially announced under the development of Black Forest Games, and published by THQ Nordic. Unfortunately, following massive corporate restructuring at Embracer Group, that iteration of the game was canceled.

In late 2025, Paramount Games Studio officially handed the reins over to PlatinumGames, the legendary Japanese studio behind fluid action titles like Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and NieR: Automata. The game was re-revealed with a new cinematic teaser trailer at the Summer Game Fest in June 2026. Because PlatinumGames only recently took over the project and effectively started from scratch, development is still in its very early stages. Considering AAA action-adventure games typically require at least three to four years of full-scale production, a launch before 2028 is highly unlikely.

Fusing Platinum combat with God of War storytelling

Despite the long wait, the new direction under PlatinumGames sounds incredibly promising for action fans.

TMNT: The Last Ronin is being designed as a single-player, third-person action RPG. According to recent interviews, the development team aims to fuse PlatinumGames' signature fast-paced, combo-heavy combat mechanics with the weighty, emotional storytelling style seen in the modern God of War franchise.

Because the Ronin utilizes all four of the Turtles' classic weapons (katanas, nunchaku, bo staff, and twin sai), players can expect a deep combat system that revolves around seamlessly swapping fighting styles mid-combo to dismantle the futuristic Foot Clan.
