Mythmatch

Mythmatch is a narrative merge-puzzle RPG developed by UK indie studio Team Artichoke, released on March 13, 2026 for Steam (PC) and macOS at $15.99. The game blends cozy puzzle mechanics with a subversive retelling of Greek mythology, where players control Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, after she is rejected by "Olympus Inc."—a corporate parody of Mount Olympus.

Mythmatch was funded by the UK Games Fund and showcased at SXSW 2025 and Wholesome Direct 2025. Lead designer Moo Yu, a former LittleBigPlanet developer at Media Molecule, describes Mythmatch as "a love letter to cozy games that aren\'t afraid to challenge late-stage capitalism."

Core Loop

Mythmatch uses merge-3 puzzle mechanics similar to Triple Town or Merge Dragons. Players match resources (wood, stone, cloth, food) on a grid to create higher-tier items, which are then used to rebuild the island of Ithaca. Completed buildings unlock new story chapters and upgrade Artemis\'s abilities.

Resource Economy

Unlike most merge games, Mythmatch has no microtransactions or energy systems. Resources regenerate through in-game time (real-time or fast-forwarded), and all content is unlockable through gameplay. The game explicitly rejects freemium models, positioning itself as an "ethical alternative" to mobile merge games.

Combat (Light)

Mythmatch includes light turn-based combat where Artemis defends Ithaca from monsters sent by Olympus Inc. Combat is puzzle-based: players match elemental tiles (fire, water, earth, air) to cast spells. Winning battles rewards rare resources and story progression.

The story begins with Artemis being fired from Olympus Inc., a megacorporation run by Zeus (CEO), after she refuses to participate in a "performance improvement plan" that requires exploiting mortal worshippers. Banished to the mortal realm, Artemis discovers the island of Ithaca (Odysseus\' homeland) has been abandoned after Olympus Inc. redirected all worship to a subscription-based "prayer app."

Artemis teams up with Penelope (Odysseus\' wife) and other mortal women to rebuild Ithaca without divine intervention, using cooperation, craftsmanship, and communal resource management. The game\'s six chapters satirize venture capital, union-busting, gig economy exploitation, and shareholder primacy.

Team Artichoke is a four-person indie studio based in Brighton, UK, founded in 2023 by Moo Yu (lead designer), Ellie Goulding (artist), Sam Watts (programmer), and Hannah Lee (writer). Moo Yu previously worked at Media Molecule on LittleBigPlanet 3 and Dreams as a level designer.

The team received £120,000 from the UK Games Fund in 2024 and self-published Mythmatch after rejecting publisher offers that required adding microtransactions or mobile ports. The studio is worker-owned (no CEO, equal profit-sharing) and operates on a four-day work week.

Mythmatch launched to 89% positive reviews on Steam ("Very Positive" rating) as of July 2026, with over 25,000 copies sold in its first four months. Players praised its cozy aesthetic, subversive narrative, and rejection of predatory monetization. Common criticisms include slow pacing in later chapters and limited replay value after completing the story.

The game was nominated for Best Indie Game at the 2026 BAFTA Game Awards and won Best Narrative at the Independent Games Festival (IGF) 2026.

Mythmatch is available on Steam (PC) and macOS for $15.99. The game launched with a 20% discount ($12.79) through March 27, 2026. There is no console version planned, though Team Artichoke has stated they are open to a Switch 2 port if Nintendo allows them to avoid proprietary storefront restrictions.
