One of the most highly anticipated sequels in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) genre has officially taken flight.
Following its initial release in South Korea and Taiwan last year, NCSoft's AION 2 has finally launched globally on PC as of October 5, 2026. Built entirely from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, the free-to-play sequel promises to modernize the iconic aerial combat and fierce faction warfare that made the original 2008 game a massive success. However, while the game boasts stunning next-generation visuals and fluid combat, its global launch has been met with a highly polarized reception from the community. Here is everything you need to know about AION 2, from its new gameplay mechanics to the current state of its microtransactions.
A world 36 times larger: setting and aerial combat
AION 2 is set 200 years after the events of Aion: The Tower of Eternity. The world of Atreia has been irreparably altered, forcing the Elyos and Asmodians to navigate a shattered, beautiful new landscape.
NCSoft designed the new map to be roughly 36 times larger than the original game, with a massive emphasis on verticality and underwater exploration. The developers boast that βthe sky is not the limit, it is the battlefield.β Players can seamlessly launch into the air to engage in three-dimensional dogfights, requiring careful positioning and altitude management to gain tactical advantages over opponents.
At launch, the global PC version features eight playable classes: Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric, and Chanter. A ninth class, the gauntlet-wielding Brawler, is currently available in the Korean and Taiwanese versions and is expected to hit global servers soon. The combat system has evolved into a hybrid action model, rewarding players for successfully chaining skills, dodging in real-time, and striking from behind.
The divide: stunning visuals vs. frustrating monetization
Despite the game exceeding 400,000 peak concurrent users on its global launch day, AION 2 currently holds a βMixedβ rating on Steam, with only 52% of user reviews leaning positive.
Critics and players alike have heavily praised the game's fluid combat animations, deeply cinematic dungeons, and breathtaking Unreal Engine 5 environments. Watching an Assassin bounce around an enemy or a Sorcerer unleash screen-clearing particle effects feels genuinely next-gen.
Unfortunately, the game is being heavily dragged down by its monetization systems and open-world design. Reviewers have called out the game's anti-consumer microtransactions, noting that the optional $15 per month subscription is tied to a specific server rather than an entire account. Furthermore, many premium cosmetics purchased in the cash store are bound to individual characters, meaning you cannot share a $30 outfit across your own alternate characters.
Additionally, some veteran MMO players have criticized the massive open world for feeling somewhat lifeless, noting that the game locks too much of the storyline behind solo-instanced zones, which limits natural co-op exploration.
If you are a fan of flashy action combat and want to experience a truly massive scale of aerial PvP warfare, AION 2 is worth the download. However, you will need to navigate a rather aggressive monetization model to get the most out of the endgame economy.
