Taiwan Secures AI Dominance | TSMC and 30 Firms Form Silicon Photonics Alliance

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan is moving aggressively to maintain its stranglehold on the global artificial intelligence hardware supply chain.

On September 6, 2026, Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs officially announced the formation of the Silicon Photonics Industry Alliance. The powerful new consortium brings together manufacturing juggernaut TSMC and more than 30 leading Taiwanese corporations. The primary objective of the alliance is to secure the island's dominance in next-generation AI data transmission technology and maintain its indispensable role in the global supply chain.

Alongside TSMC, the heavyweight roster of founding members includes semiconductor packaging leader ASE Technology, fabless chipmaker MediaTek, and manufacturing giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (Foxconn).

The Push for Co-Packaged Optics | CPO

As AI models grow increasingly complex, the physical limitations of traditional electrical data transmission have become a major bottleneck for data centers. The new alliance will focus its collective resources on jointly developing and commercializing Co-Packaged Optics (CPO).

CPO technology integrates optical communication components directly alongside AI processors. Instead of relying on traditional copper wiring and electrical signals, CPO transmits data using light. This optical connectivity is widely regarded as a critical next-generation leap, capable of drastically reducing power consumption while exponentially boosting data transmission speeds.

The announcement of the alliance arrives on the heels of Semicon Taiwan 2026, which was held from September 2-4 in Taipei. During the massive industry event, silicon photonics emerged as a central theme, with tech leaders emphasizing the need for a unified domestic supply chain to meet the explosive global demand for AI infrastructure.

The formation of the Silicon Photonics Industry Alliance represents Taiwan's most coordinated effort yet to defend its position as the indispensable node in the global AI supply chain. With TSMC already manufacturing the world's most advanced AI chips for Nvidia, AMD, and others, the addition of a domestically controlled silicon photonics ecosystem would make Taiwan even harder to bypass.
